Lore

  • What are the monsters in this game called?
    The monsters in the game are called “kinfolk”
  • What time period does this game take place in?
    The game is set in the modern era. For the most part, it's the same as the real world but with the addition of Kinfolk.
  • Do we have a name for the region and some starter lore?
    The region is named Hinterlock but no lore yet.
  • How important will be the lore in this game will every monster will have its own lore explaining how that monster is and why it looks in a certain way?
    Without spoiling anything, lore will be very important.
  • Does chess exist in K.F.?
    Unspecified.
  • Will there be legendary Kinfolk?
    There are, and they will have a large impact on the game's story.
  • Do kinfolk have their own writing system?
    Unspecified.
  • Do kinfolk have their own language, is there a lore reason if they do?
    Unlikely as they communicate via human language.
  • How did kinfolk and humans come to live together?
    You’ll need to play the game to find out :)
  • Could kinfolk and humans fall in love?
    No
  • What meat do kinfolk eat, is it a spoiler?
    Kinfolk used to eat people and each others flames but have stopped for some reason.
  • Is there food made out of kinfolk, and can you eat a kinfolk?
    No

    Yes.

Legal

  • Aren’t you going to get a cease and desist from Nintendo?
    No, In the same way that Dark Souls and Nioh are games in the same genre, so are K.F. and Pokemon. This game and everything in it is an original IP. K.F. isn't infringing on anyone's copyright, so there's no reason the team would receive a cease and desist.
  • Will streaming of the battle arena be allowed or is there an NDA?
    You can stream it.

Technical

  • What engine is the game being developed in?
    Unity 3D & C#.
  • What will the graphics be like?
    Currently under developement.
  • What hardware requirements are you aiming for?
    An average computer or PC as well as the switch.
  • What platforms will this be released on?
    The game will be on steam and will release on PC. Depending on the success of the Kickstarter, they may also be able to release on Switch.
  • Will there be multiple save files?
    Yes
  • Could i soft reset the game to keep my kinfolk from dying?
    The game automatically saves when the flame goes out so no.
  • When will it come to switch, and if it does will it be unfinished and just updated slowly?
    Too early to say.
  • Will there be multiple releases or versions of the alpha?
    Yes, there will be constant patches to the alpha, both with fixing bugs and new features.
  • Will save data be linked to steam accounts, computers or something else?
    It’s being looked into being able to play on multiple devices.
  • Are people testing the game yet?
    No.
  • Will there be plans to make the game online in general, other than online pvp but with playing the story co-op with friends or running in the world and seeing other players?
    Co-op is a stretch goal but it will not be an MMO.
  • When it comes to the online battling, is it known whether the connection will be based on a server, or between players?
    P2P is known to be preferable to servers for 1v1 fighting games online so that is likely what we will go with. Dedicated servers, while great for games that contain teams of players introduces a base amount of lag that P2P does not. This is something we will explore much more in depth in the coming months as we develop our network structure.
  • Will this game have online features?
    Yes. It is a story-driven single play game, but you will have the ability to trade and battle with your friends.
  • In terms of game mechanics how much of the game is done?
    This is a bit hard to gauge. If I had to give a rough estimate- probably 50% - 70%. This could change as we enter full production.
  • With the type mechanics planned how they are what are the reasons for typings if they will not do extra damage to their favorable matchup or take extra damage from unfavorable?
    The playstyles of types are intended to to counter each other. Rather than dealing more damage, your playstyle would perform better against your opponents. This system remains to be fully tested.
  • Can you go fishing and how does the cooking mechanic work?
    Mechanics like this is something we know we will have, but at this stage they have not been planned out fully.
  • Is there fast travel and if so, where can you fast travel to?
    There will almost certainly be a form of fast travel. It will depend on how effective traversing the map on land and flying will be. We want you to feel at home in-game and be able to travel the world almost by memory.
  • Will the game have a calender system?
    Possibly as a part of seasons in the Advanced Environmental Interactions Goal.
  • Will furniture and cosmetics be cash based?
    No. There will be no microtransactions.
  • Will the crown item for mechid change its appearance according to if it’s a phantom version?
    No. It’s just an item skin and will replace the phantom with the royal.
  • Will the game have multi-monitor support?
    Not sure about this yet. We will certainly try! SM_Rob uses dual monitors to develop the game on, so it’s on their radar.
  • Are there any plans for mod support?
    Yes, mods will be allowed but patches will need to be implemented to prevent them from messing up the game.
  • What’s the purpose of digital rewards if it’s going to be offline mainly?
    When you download your copy of the game it will come with the digital rewards you earned during the Kickstarter campaign.
  • Will there be a system for organizing and holding your kinfolk?
    Yes.
  • If there is a sequel what will you do for transferring and storage of kinfolk?
    will it be a seperate program or will the new game scan the device for a previous game data and take your kinfolk out of it and slap them into your new game alongside any new ones you have. as well how would you reward players for bringing old kinfolk up to the new games?They have not thought that far ahead but will keep it in mind.
  • What Languages will the game have?
    It will be in english but translations are planned. The languages the game is translated to will depend on which are most beneficial to the player base as a whole. So far it’s too early to say which languages the game will be translated to.
  • How large will the world be?
    Hinterlock is 37.5 km squared or 14.5 square miles. A bit bigger than Skyrim.
  • Will there be a limited amount of guild space available?
    No.
  • Will there be different personalities/voicelines for different kinfolk?
    There is no voice acting, but yes.
  • Will there be day/seasons/weather?
    The game will have a day night cycle and some weather. Seasons are currently listed as a part of the Advanced Environmental Mechanics stretch goal
  • Will there be dlc?
    Possibly, it’s far too early to say at this point. If DLC is added in the future it won’t contain anything that should’ve been in the game prior.

Art Direction

  • Will there be an anime?
    Not in the foreseeable future.
  • Are you planning on reworking the artstyle to make it brighter and more colorful?
    They are planning on updating the visuals but it will not be brighter or more colorful as to match the games nature.
  • Will kinfolk only be swiss based?
    Many will, but not all.
  • Do the designs have to be super complex?
    No, simplicity is preferred. A good example is gen 1 garchomp over gen 5 charizard.
  • Does the art have to be colored to be submitted?
    No.
  • Does skymil accept character designs?
    Yes
  • When it comes to water kinfolk will you accept fish designs, similar to goldeen, and will they float or will they require an ability to go on land?
    The method we’re planning on going with at the moment is similarish to what you mentioned with goldeen.
  • How anthro will you go?
    Mecha’s will be the most humanoid, all other types can be bipedal but will be primarily animalistic
  • Have any kinfolk been chosen for the game from the art contributions yet?
    Unspecified.
  • Will kinfolk designs be accepted after the kickstarter?
    For a little while
  • When will it be decided which designs that we all made will make it in?
    We don’t have a date in mind for this yet, but we love seeing everyone’s ideas and frequently add contributions to our watch list.
  • How will you know if the dev team has accepted your design?
    They’ll DM you.

    Yes.
  • Why do some kinfolk show up on fakemon accounts such as Kahstrix and Slyphur?
    We worked with these artists to create or adapt their designs for Kindred Fates.
  • Do you have any kinfolk designs that are inspired by magic the gathering?

  • What inspired you to create kinfolk like the water dragon and slyphur?
    Don Pablo for the dragon, wickett just came up with sylphur for a while
  • Will people who inspired designs or made designs be given credit?

    The kinfolk and human models are designed by simon, and the environment models are created by ArtoNova(Buildings, benches, bread stands, bushes, etc…)

  • Why are all reptiles water type?
    Currently the only water reptile is bakionawa so it will be more varied than it currently is.
  • Will there be a western style dragon?
    Rob likes dragons so maybe.
  • Is there a rat kinfolk planned?
    Unconfirmed.
  • Are Phantom Kinfolk usually black/dark, have ghost-themed palette swap or can they be any colour?
    All Phantoms will have a ghostly appearance they won't all have the black,blue,red colors

Game

  • What price are you aiming to sell the game at?
    30$ us.
  • What will the rating for the game be?
    T for teen.
  • When is the game going to be released?
    Hopefully in 3 years.
  • Will you be making a phone game version?
    No it’s not something they’re able to do.
  • How long will it be?
    Unknown as of now.
  • What’s a game that has similar combat to this one?

  • Are there any names for interior areas of hinterlock?
    Yes.
  • How old are the protagonists?
    18-20
  • Are the protagonists 3 ft tall?
    No they are taller.
  • Do the protagonists have canonical names?
    No
  • Will the flame last longer the stronger the bond?
    Yes.
  • Will the bond system work how it does in dating sims?
    There are specific actions that can raise or lower your bond such as playing games, sharing a meal, talking or winning a battle while losing battles and make bad choices will lower the bond.
  • Will there be bond based evolutions?
    Unconfirmed.
  • Who are the kindred?
    The kindred aren’t really anything but more of a term for the bond between people and kinfolk as well as other kinfolk.
  • This game looks darker and more mature than Pokemon and I don't like that.
    This is not a question but their answer to this is that many of them grew up with pokemon and wanted it to mature with them and so the game reflects that. It will include thought-provoking storytelling, sympathetic antagonists, character development, morally ambiguous decisions, and living with the consequences of your actions.
  • Will it be mature like Dauntless or Grimoire like The Secret World:Kingsmouth?
    They want the game to be dark but punctuated by bright, emotional and meaningful moments to drive you forward in the story, so more like dauntless.
  • Will there be different biomes?
    There will be forests, grasslands, snow, mountains, caves, towns, mountains, lakes, and islands.
  • No deserts?
    It is based on switzerland and they are trying to remain true to that region but it is possible new biomes could be introduced.
  • Why switzerland, is it the themes or because of environments?
    The dev team loved hiking, backpacking, camping, etc… and they wanted the world to be as captivating and fun as if it was real and switzerland was beautiful and has a large amount of biomes to play with.
  • Where do items come from?
    Items will come from a wide variety of places from bosses, shops, dungeons, out in the world, more.
  • Will there be lore collectibles scattered around the world?
    Yep! I love a simple world collectible!
  • What are the stats, stat growth items and stat training things?
    Much of this is still in development.
  • What is the cryptic journal?
    An item gotten from a quest and will contain art done by the community.
  • Will there be a team to help people with their cryptic journal designs?
    No, but you are welcome to enlist the help of friends or artists you know.
  • Is there a beastiary and will there be a reward for completing it?
    Yes.
  • Will there be item based evolutions?
    Most likely, but they won’t look gimmicky.
  • Will it be possible to get all evolutions with a royal mechid?
    Yes. You can give the crown to any mechid.
  • Is the song in the trailers going to be in game?
    Yes.
  • Will there be a change of the musical style?
    Currently K.F. only has 3 songs and many more will be added so expect more variety but they will be sticking to emotional orchestral pieces that heavily feature piano, violin, cello, and occasionally acoustic guitar.
  • Is combat real time, or turn based?
    The game has been built with real time combat in mind. They are open to the idea of including turn based combat as an option though for players who prefer it. It is currently one of the stretch goals on the Kickstarter.
  • Will the game have energy in the real time battles to stop move spamming or will it work like smash bros?
    Currently it is more like smash bros with no energy bar.
  • Can players choose their preferable battle mode?
    A stretch goal is to choose between turn based and real time battles.
  • Will it be possible to fight multiple enemy kin at once?
    Yes.
  • How do you escape combat?
    In the single player game you can run away but this might not work well if you're drawing mob aggro or are in a cave. Online this won't be the case.
  • Would battles be between only kinfolks or would tamers also participate with weapons of their own?
    Trainers can fight as a last resort.
  • What abilities will the character have outside of the kinfolk?
    A weak attack.
  • Will we be able to jump?
    Yes
  • Will there be human death and can humans be attacked?
    Humans can be attacked unknown if they can die.
  • If multiple kinfolk die can you collect them all at once?
    No you have to get them individually.

    No but it is under consideration.

    Yes some terrains can hold you back while others can help you.

    They don’t but they do affect your movesets and stats

    Healing will be balanced into the kinfolk movesets.

    Endgame will be something we spend a lot of time and stress on. We want it to be very replayable when you enter New Game+ and outside of your guild as well.

    Depends on the kickstarters success but it will include one of each type over time.
  • Do kinfolk have predetermined moves in the battle arena?
    They plan on letting you customize your team and their movesets.

    You can select up to 2 kinfolk teammates and then assign them to go find another kinfolk. As long as the player has bonded with that kind of kinfolk in the past they can get teammates to search for them.
  • Will the royal mechid be recruitable?
    Not anymore as it used to be its own species until it was decided that mechids will become royal if given an item so any mechid can become royal.
  • Can you add accessories onto your kinfolk?
    Yes
  • Will there be trading?
    Yes.
  • Will i be able to catch every kinfolk without trading?
    Yes
  • What is the max level, can we max out their stats?
    100 and you can max out their stats..
  • Does level have any effect on the personality and maturity of a kinfolk?

  • How will you obtain new kinfolk for your party?
    First you need to make their soul vulnerable (this turns their health bar blue), then after dealing enough damage to down them, you go up to the kinfolk and play an arrow based minigame. This fills up a blue bar and then you are able to catch it.
  • Can you travel to and interact with the mountains?
    Yes.
  • Will we be able to ski?
    No.
  • Will there be cutscenes?
    Yes.
  • Will there be an ability to skip cutscenes and other cinematics?

    Current info available is that you get a home at the beginning of the game, furniture, layout and expansions are customizable, you can add a garden, craft items and upgrade key items, you return home when defeated in a battle, you will find other homes for sale in various towns.
  • Will you be able to visit another person’s house?
    If the co-op stretch goal is reached
  • Will there be resource gathering?
    A bit if you choose to.
  • Will there be side quests and post-content?
    Yes to both, you can also choose to start a new game+ where you lose all progress and restart the story at an early point with increased difficulty but you keep your kinfolk and is repeatable and stackable or continue playing where there will be new stuff to do.
  • Will there be any characters based off the people actually working on the game?
    Potentially.
  • Will npcs be complex and have likes other than kinfolk and even people who don’t care about them at all?
    If I understand the question correctly, yes. Humans will have interests other than training and battling kinfolk, or that don’t involve kinfolk at all.

    Something similar called guilds.

    No.

    Depends on the funding.

    There is always a choice and different classes of evolutionary paths with class 1:no evolutions, 2:A split evolution, 3:3 split evolutions. 4:4 split evolutions or 2 split evolutions and one of those gaining 2 more split evolutions, 5:5 split evolutions or 2 split evolutions with one gaining 3 split evolutions, or 3 split evolutions with one gaining 2 split evolutions, 6:6 split evolutions or 2 split evolutions with one having 4 split evolutions, or 2 split evolutions with both getting 2 split evolutions, or 3 split evolutions with one gaining 3 split evolutions and 7:9 split evolutions.
  • How does typing work?
    In basic typing essence Null(Normal, fighting), Fire (Fire, dragon, electric), Water (Water, ice), Earth (Ground, Rock, steel), Air (Flying, electric), Gaia(Grass, bug), Mecha(Steel, electric), Light(Psychic, electric, fairy), Dark(Dark, Ghost, Poison) Types primarily follow a playstyle with Fire=Zoner, Water=Combo, Gaia=Summoner, Air=Glass Cannon, Earth=Crowd Control, Mecha=Tank, Light=Buffer, Dark=Debuffer, Null=Neutral
  • Why is the grass type named gaia?
    Gaia simply means nature.
  • Do plants have the gaia type?
    They can, but aren’t forced to.
  • Are kinfolk multitype?
    There will be leanings towards other types but all kinfolk are monotype.
  • How will sub elements be typed such as ice, electric, etc… be typed?
    They will be typed the same as their primary element or something close to it.
  • Won’t that mean there will be playstyle clones?
    It will be inevitable but move pools will differ.

    They have assured us that they want to make a game, not just money. They currently have investors outside of the kickstarter who want to see that they have an audience which is the main purpose of the kickstarter other than funding the game. They have been inspired by CD Projekt Red and Naughty Dog.
  • Don’t you think its too early to start a kickstarter?
    Everything seen has been funded directly from their pockets, it has been over a year since they started development.
  • Will there be a special paypal page of kickstarter?
    Kickstarter doesn’t support it so no.
  • Will there be a backer tier for designing Kinfolk to be added to the game?
    It is currently one of the highest tiers at 5,000$ with a limit of 3 people although currently it is unfilled.
  • How many Kinfolk does Creator Tier apply to or will it just tie to a single line?
    One
  • How do i get a copy of the game early?
    The closest thing to this is the alpha and beta which are available as rewards for donating to the Kickstarter.
  • I know the game is in alpha but it is currently playable and how long can backers of the challenger tier and higher expect to wait to gain access to the combat arena?
    7 months for debugs and online matchmaking at least.
  • What's The Combat Arena?
    Only available if the kickstarter is successful you will be given a key to test the combat system and battle people online and give feedback with multiple arenas and seven kinfolk to use.
  • How do we get a key?
    Give aways periodically and backers get one from the kickstarter
  • Will other kinfolk be able to save your dead kinfolk?
    No.
  • Do we get to choose the phantom starter or is it set in stone?
    We’re choosing to keep details surrounding the starters a secret until the game’s release.

    Still determining the best way to handle this. Depending on what the community prefers it may be trade locked.

    At least 5 4K wallpapers.

    Rob has composed the music so far and is the founder and jack of all trades.

    3 Developers, 2 writers, 10 Artists, 2 Modelers, and 3 Animators.
  • Where are they from?
    Skymill is based out of Columbus Ohio, but have team members all over the world.
  • Do your writers have some already written works?
    None that have been published.
  • Have the team done other projects before kindred fates?
    Yes such as league of legends, wild star, clash royal and the movie 300.
  • Is skymill looking for a writing team?
    We are not. SM_Rob and SM_Tori will be the game’s writers.
  • What part of the game is the team prioritising and how far along is the story?
    Our first priority after the Kickstarter is the alpha combat arena. The majority of planning for the game’s story is finished.
  • Does SM-Wicket prefer embear or kainite?
    They prefer embear but they prefer mechid over them
  • Who will your choice of publisher be and will you let them make it exclusive?
    The game will be DRM free so no exclusivity and no mention of a certain publisher.
  • Will you do a new game after this?
    They would like to.

    We’re considering adding many questions and responses to our wiki at the moment. In the meantime we will probably pin this doc.

    It’s unlikely that the Kickstarter will receive so much funding that the full game releases significantly sooner. It is still too early to say with certainty when the full game will release.
  • How much is gonna change from the shading of the environment and characters later on?
    We’re constantly improving the game’s visuals. Take a look at our dev progress video on YouTube to get an idea for how much the game’s visuals can change in a few months. They will continue to be improved.

    Pioneer is just a discord role, you must pay the kickstarter to get the game early.
